Jetstar to fly direct from Gold Coast to China in airline first

JETSTAR will provide a direct gateway to the Gold Coast for the booming Chinese tourist market from later this year, when a twice weekly service toWuhan begins.

It will be the first time Jetstar has operated direct flights between Australia and China.

Jetstar Asia currently flies from Singapore to several Chinese ports including Haikou, Hangzhou and Shantou.

China’s outbound tourism market is tipped to explode in coming years, as more of the country’s 1.3 billion people move into the “middle class”.

More than 700,000 Chinese travelled to Australia becoming our second largest inbound tourism market, and that figure is expected to soon top a million providing there is airline capacity.

Jetstar Australia and New Zealand CEO David Hall said the new flights would deliver substantial economic benefits to tourism and hospitality operators.

“We are proud to connect the Gold Coast and China with direct flights, which is such an important tourism market for Australia,” said Mr Hall.

“This new service opens up a direct link between Southeast Queensland and one of the largest travel markets in the world, delivering about 70,000 seats between China and the Gold Coast each year.”

The service will be delivered in partnership with the Dalian Wanda Group which in investing heavily in the Gold Coast region.

“We’re really pleased to contribute to this unique partnership and it’s a great opportunity for us to build our presence in the Chinese market with the establishment of a direct service from Australia.”

The new services will start on September 29, on one of Jetstar’s 335-seat Boeing 787 Dreamliner aircraft, providing government and regulatory approval is granted.

The nine-and-a-half hour flight will operate Tuesdays and Saturdays.

China southern Airlines already services the Gold Coast which has become a major hub for Jetstar.

The Australian carrier also flies direct from the Gold Coast to Queenstown, Alice Springs and Hawaii, along with a host of other destinations.
